From demanding career to a breakdown, followed by the slow easing back to better times, Kathy Slack's story is one of hope with a simple cure: time and nature.
What a great read, thank you. I love Kathy, her book and her outlook and it’s been too long since i watched Big Night and I’m grateful for the reminder
I adore Big Night. See also the making of grilled cheese as the credits roll (or after the credits? Can’t remember) at the end of Jon Favreau’s film Chef.
Kathy is such an inspiration! Have a great time in Cornwall, Kāren. Both you and Kathy should visit Crocadon Farm, the amazing farmer-chef Dan Cox is doing amazing things there. https://www.crocadon.farm
I loved reading Kathy's book 'The Rough Patch' and also have just had the most awesome ''Field to Fork' adventure with Kathy, Kirstie Young (photographer) and five other great companions enjoying all things good and delicious at the Manoir Mouret 'retreat' in south- west France....
Karen, thank you! It’s such an honour to feature here in your gorgeous newsletter. Thank you for having me and for all your wise and generous support over the years. We are all lucky to have you as a champion 💚💚
I missed Kathy’s book launch as I was going through my own rough patch. Maybe someday I’ll put that into proper words. It’s really quite incredible how quickly one falls into the hamster wheel and how the mind justifies being there but the worst is being so blinkered you can’t get off until you break. I’m so sorry you went through this too but so pleased you’re coming out of it.
So true, Urvashi. My experience was four years ago now and nothing like as severe as Kathy’s, but it was such a shock when it happened - and a moment to reassess everything; most importantly, what I had come to see as the norm in terms of workload, what was expected of me, what I said yes to (in all walks of life) and where the boundaries were. I hope you’re doing ok now and have been able to take time to rest and regroup.
Therapy is helping. So much is deep rooted into my upbringing. It’s so clear once you see it. And yes to rest! I had lost track of what that is. Getting LOTS of it now :-)

Thanks mark! Also - the final scene of Big Night when he makes that omelette and it’s about a 5 minute take is the BEST

Thank you, Carolyn - Dan is on my very lengthy list. Can’t get there this time but next…!
No worries! Let me know if you want an introduction! Cx
Ooo I’ve clearly been living under a rock cuz I hadn’t clocked this place. Thank you!
Getting close to nature is always good for the soul!

That sounded as if it was going to be the best experience with Kathy and Kirstie. So pleased you had a good time.
Love it
I wish I’d got to speak longer to Kathy last week! Loved reading this.
It’s a lovely one, isn’t it? Thanks, Jennifer

What a kind thing to say, Kathy - and thank YOU. So many good recommendations and wise thoughts in your Joyous Things.
